A 16-year-old Alliston girl accused of first-degree murder in the death of a newborn baby has been released on bail.
The girl, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is also subject to a host of strict conditions and must be in the presence of a surety at all times.
Bail was granted by the judge during Wednesday’s bail hearing at the Barrie courthouse.
A publication ban on evidence presented at the hearing or that may identify the accused is also in place.
Nottawasaga OPP has said officers were called to an Alliston residence around 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 21, 2024 and found a deceased baby inside the home.
The girl was arrested and charged about two months later, on Jan. 15, and had been in custody until released into her surety’s care Wednesday afternoon.
The girl also faces a charge of performing an indignity to a human body.
Police said the charges were laid in connection to a suspicious death investigation, which was later ruled a homicide.
Police did not say what the relationship is between the accused and the deceased.
None of the allegations have been tested in court.
The accused is due back in Barrie court on March 4.
