A judge has rejected the Crown’s appeal to increase the sentence for a Barrie man who was found guilty last year on a child-pornography charge.

Mark Richardson had pleaded guilty in September 2023 and received a 90-day sentence.

The Crown had sought to increase Richardson’s sentence, but Madame Justice Laura Bird told the court she found the original sentence, passed by Justice Glenn Krelove, was appropriate.

Both the Crown and Richardson’s lawyer, David Wilcox, made arguments before Bird rendered her decision Monday at the Barrie courthouse.

The case was part of Project Maverick, a multi-jurisdictional probe into child exploitation that, according to a police release in November 2022, resulted in 428 charges against 107 people.

Five area residents, including Richardson, faced charges as part of Project Maverick.
