VIDEO: Calculating the hidden costs of a cancer diagnosis

This week on our 'Inside the Village' podcast: A team of researchers from Sudbury is trying to put a dollar figure on the out-of-pocket expenses that pile up when a person is fighting cancer

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.

On this week's episode: The cost of a cancer diagnosis.

Fighting cancer is hard enough. But anyone who has been touched by the disease knows there is something else that can takes its toll: out-of-pocket expenses, from the cost of taking time off work to necessary travel expenses.

A team from Sudbury’s Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) is trying to get a better understanding of just how costly cancer can be. They are about to launch a new study that examines the financial impact of cancer on patients in northern Ontario.

One of the researchers, Stacey Santi, joins the podcast to talk about what prompted the research and what they hope to uncover.
