MidlandToday welcomes letters to the editor at [email protected] or via the website. Please include your full name, daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication). The following letter concerns the former Villa Retirement Home on Midland that is now for sale.

The Villa Retirement Home 689 Yonge Street Midland is for sale. It would be a perfect fit for transitional housing for people who cannot afford the high cost of rental apartments and homes in the Midland area.

As I drive through downtown Midland late in the day I am seeing more seniors homeless on the streets. Homelessness is not just for the young people anymore, there are more in the age range of 40 and over who do work two to three jobs but still have nowhere to live but in their cars or campers.

Can the Town of Midland and the Ontario Government not come together on some kind of an arrangement to let these people benefit from these kinds of buildings? They could have a rent amount geared to their income and still be close to the downtown core. Instead of us waiting until the Government can figure out a solution to the homeless and food bank problem, let the town they live and work in help them out.

You never know when it might be you or a family member in that position.
