MidlandToday welcomes letters to the editor at [email protected] or via the website. Please include your full name, daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication). The following is an open letter to Premier Doug Ford.

Thank you for your efforts to protect Ontario from economic chaos being unleashed by Mr. Trump and the United States.

However, it is not clear why you are increasing our reliance on imported American fossil gas and nuclear energy at a time when we should be doing everything in our power to move away from costly, unsustainable, polluting energy sources.

You know Ontario has lots of options for keeping its lights on without American gas or American's small nuclear reactors, including the ability to triple our low-cost solar and wind energy (with storage); and by expanding our east-west electricity links with our power-rich neighbouring provinces.

You could help Ontario's homeowners reduce their reliance on American energy sources for home heating by increasing your government’s incentives for installing air-source heat pumps from $2,000 to $7,500.

Boycotting American liquor is a good start, but boycotting American fossil gas and nuclear energy contracts will send a real economic message about Ontario's economic strength and resiliency.

You can reduce Ontario's reliance on imported American gas and you can cancel nuclear contracts with Americans.

With your leadership, Ontario, and Canada, can show the rest of the world how to win with safe, sustainable, affordable renewable energy.

I look forward to hearing about your plans.
