Aiding dogs like Tessa icing on cupcake for local animal shelter

Local teen Abbie Maclean has collected most funds provincewide for Cupcake Day; Huronia Museum offering free admission Monday along with OSPCA fundraiser

As the local OPSCA shelter gears up for one of its biggest fundraisers of the year, they’re also asking for help in rehoming a senior dog.

Tessa, a nine-year-old Great Dane mix, has been at the Midland and District Animal Centre since last fall.

“She is looking for someone to provide the best care for her golden years in a house where she is the only fur baby,” shelter community outreach coordinator Carolyn Gibson said.

“Tessa walks great on a leash and loves to just relax. She does have some incontinence due to her age and absolutely loves her naps. She enjoys tough toys she can chew on.”

For those unable to adopt, Gibson says supporting the shelter through the sale of cupcakes really helps out.

“As a registered charity that does not receive annual government funding, the Ontario SPCA depends on the generosity of donors to change the lives of animals like these innocent pups,” Gibson explains.

“That's why Cupcake Day for the Ontario SPCA is such an important fundraiser. If you'd like to help a dog like Tessa, but aren't in a position to adoption, you can still do something sweet for animals.”

So far this year, Midland teen Abbie MacLean has collected the most donations provincewide with $1,360 going towards the Feb. 26 fundraiser by combining her love of animals with her passion for baking.

“This is my fourth year of baking to raise money for animals in need,” Abbie explains.

“I am a huge animal lover and I really enjoy baking. It brings me joy to help animals while doing something I love.”

Over the past four years, Abbie has raised more than $6,000 for the local SPCA and hopes to even more with help from area residents.

“For any donation, I will give six assorted cupcakes,” she says. “I promise they're good!”

As well to keep with the cupcake theme, the Huronia Museum is offering free admission this Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to celebrate  Family Day weekend.

“Join us for hot chocolate, board games, Trivial Pursuit and a cupcake fundraiser for the OSPCA,” the museum notes on its Facebook page.
