Boat fire at Hindson Marina in Penetanguishene extinguished

Boat was moored at time of early-morning fire; adjacent craft damaged

Penetanguishene Fire and Emergency Services responded to a boat fire at Hindson Marina at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

On arrival, crews found a boat, secured in a slip, fully aflame. The fire was impinging on boats on either side, reported Penetanguishene Fire Chief Richard Renaud.

“Access to the fire was challenging as there was only one route to the slip by way of the dock system. Fire crews used a portable pump, on the dock, to fight the fire. An aerial device was also deployed, from the shoreline, to protect exposures,” Renaud said.

The Midland and Tiny fire departments assisted Penetanguishene firefighters on scene.

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation. Boats on either side of the one involved sustained damage.

Kelly Hindson, of Hindson Marina, said the fire broke out on H dock.

“We are relieved to report that no injuries were sustained during this incident, and all individuals present are safe and accounted for. All of the other boat owners in the vicinity of the fire have been contacted,” he wrote on the marina’s Facebook page.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to the boaters who swiftly responded to the situation, providing crucial assistance and support. Your quick thinking, co-operation, and bravery were instrumental in ensuring the safety of everyone involved. We are truly grateful for your selflessness and community spirit.”

Hindson went on to say, “The combined efforts of marina staff, emergency services and the boating community helped contain the fire and minimize its impact.”

The incident will cause a temporary disruption to certain departments.

“Your safety and well-being remain our utmost priority and we will continue to work diligently to maintain a secure environment for all,” Hindson said.

“We would like to remind everyone to remain vigilant and promptly report any potential safety concerns or suspicious activities to our marina office. If it is urgent, please contact 911. By working together, we can ensure the continued enjoyment and safety of our vibrant marina community.”
