Bridge club reshuffles deck after Midland fails to renew lease

'The room is bright and views from the windows will be beautiful in the winter when the snow falls,' local bridge club North Simcoe Bridge president says after move to Brooklea Golf & Country Club

This is a place where someone saying 'one no trump' doesn’t raise eyebrows.

While hearing the former and incoming U.S. president’s surname sometimes garners a reaction, it’s just part of the vernacular for Midland Bridge members.

Earlier this month, the club moved to new digs from its long-time location on William Street, a move that was necessary after the Town of Midland opted not to renew its lease.

“We moved all our tables and technical equipment (computer, printer, flat-screen monitor, dealing machine, remotes) and all of the other supplies related to playing bridge,” North Simcoe Bridge and Games Club president Gail Chapman tells MidlandToday.

“We are now set up inside the clubhouse at Brooklea, in the Brookside Room with the fireplace for the winter months.  In the spring, we will move out to the old pro shop, which has been refurbished for our use.”

Chapman says members are adjusting to the change and are determined to make this new location work.

“The room is bright and clean and the views from the windows will be beautiful in the winter when the snow falls,” she adds.

Chapman says various groups using the new location mean more than 200 people, including members and guests, will now enjoy playing at the golf club.

The “sanctioned” bridge club plays on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and charges an annual membership fee of $20. Table fees are $5 per day.

The unsanctioned Thursday club does not have a membership fee and charges a $4 table fee.

“For each of these clubs you must come with a partner but we have a partnership person who will help you find a partner if you don't already have one,” Chapman says, noting euchre is played on Fridays at noon and there is no membership fee.

A town representative did not return a request for comment by publication time regarding what Midland plans to do with the building.
