Canada Day festivities draw big crowd to Little Lake Park

A sea of people from the community flooded into the park to enjoy the festivities; fireworks will be held tonight in Penetanguishene

It was a beautiful day for Midland’s annual Canada Day celebration in Little Lake Park today.

As is tradition, the day began with the Midland Civitan Club's Canada Day parade in the morning which started at the Midland Harbour, before travelling up King Street and ending with a meander through Little Lake Park.

Floats included the Civitan Club’s famous train, Mayor Bill Gordon and his wife driving a red convertible and a vintage fire truck to pump up the crowd and get everyone excited for the day's events.

A sea of people from the community flooded into the park to enjoy the festivities and immediately started fanning out into the park to continue the day; the vendors started opening up, the inflatable playground became operational and the live music began.

There were jugglers, a Mountie on stilts for an eccentric photo op and a sea of red, white and, of course, very excited dogs. The event also featured food vendors including rice and cheese covered hot dogs, shaved ice and the nostalgic ice cream trucks offering the treats everyone loves and remembers.

Kids activities included face painting, laser tag, a magic show, slapshot hockey, and crafts from Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre.

For the adults, there was an antique car show, live music by Dylan Lock, Brudders from Another Mudder, the Wendy Laurier Band an arts and crafts show and much more.

Overall, it was a day of fun, music, food and celebrating Canada amid a sea of red and white.

Canada Day celebrations are also happening in the neighbouring town of Penetanguishene at the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum. Going until 6 p.m., you can walk from the museum to Rotary Champlain Wendat Park, which will host live music being performed from a couple of local favourites: Emma Reynolds and Dylan Lock

It’s Penetanguishene’s turn to host fireworks this year; the show will begin at dusk.
