The Georgian Bay Cycle for Hope, a one-day fundraiser in support of the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre in Penetanguishene, is coming up on Aug. 20.

The 11th year for this annual fundraiser marks the first time it has been a live, in-person event since 2019. It has a new name, along with a few other exciting changes for participating riders.

Cyclists from all around Georgian Bay and across the province will once again be taking to the roads and trails in north Simcoe during the Cycle for Hope. Previously known as Cycle Camelot, the fundraiser for the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre has raised over $400,000 to help support local people living with cancer, their families, and caregivers. There are four scenic routes for riders to choose from: 10, 25, 50 and 100 kilometres.

“We really took the opportunity to reimagine everything this ride can be,” says Eric Walter, executive director, Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre. “It really is a celebration of how lucky we are to be amongst some of the most scenic cycling routes in the province along with top-notch support resources for people with cancer. It is going to be a great day for a great cause, with something for everyone involved.”

This year’s new and improved live event will also feature a special outdoor celebration at the Penetanguishene Curling Club (site of the official ride finish line). Along with live music provided by First Nayme Basis, the celebration will feature a barbecue and various community groups will offer up family fun activities for all.

Riders can register until event day and the cost is only $60, which includes a lunch, T-shirt, and other special giveaways. Plus, riders can create a customized fundraising page online, making it easy to raise funds for their ride. This year every rider registered is entered into a draw for a chance to win a Trek FX2 hybrid bike from Total Sports. For each $100 raised, a participant receives another entry into the draw.

For the first time, signs will be placed along the cycle route in honour of someone currently on their cancer journey or to remember someone who fought so hard. Anyone can have a name added to a sign for just $50. Details can be found at cycleforhope.com.
