The Canada Steamship Lines laker might look mighty lonely today as it waits on a desolate section of Midland Bay.
But Thursday, the ship will get some company with the CCGS Griffon scheduled to arrive to carry out icebreaking operations, according to the Canadian Coast Guard.
"The purpose of these operations is to break up the ice to allow commercial vessels safe and efficient movement in and out of the port," the agency noted in a release Wednesday.
The CSL Frontenac is awaiting the Whitefish Bay to arrive and unload its cargo. Once the Whitefish Bay is gone the Frontenac will winter at the grain elevator till spring.
The Coast Guard recommends that all traffic on the ice, including pedestrians, fishermen, snowmobilers, and all-terrain vehicle operators, leave the ice during icebreaking operations. The ice may move, creating a real danger for anyone on it. Additionally, plan activities carefully and use extreme caution after operations are complete. Unstable ice conditions remain long after the icebreaker has left the area.
