A Midland resident is one of four people in the country to receive a 4-H Canada Leadership Excellence Award of Distinction.
Andrew Jones won a $20,000 scholarship to go toward his post-secondary education and will receive mentorship from an expert in his field of study.
The awards are tied to 4-H Canada’s four leadership development pillars — community engagement and communications, science and technology, environment and healthy living, and sustainable agriculture and food security. Jones was recognized under the science and technology pillar.
Jones, who was born and raised on a dairy and crop farm, spent nine years with the Elmvale 4-H Club. He competed at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic in 2017 and 2022, as well as at the 2018 4-H Canada Science Fair in Nova Scotia. He credits 4-H for sparking his passion for scientific design and ingenuity.
Jones will attend Queen’s University, with the goal of earning a bachelor of science in engineering and becoming a chemical engineer.
Others who received 4-H Canada Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction are Amy Bishop, of St. Mary’s, N.L., Victoria Pitsiaeli, of Maple Ridge, B.C., and Olivia Taylor, of Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove, N.L.
“Each year, with CN’s support, we are able to help impressive youth leaders attain their educational goals, not only by providing them with significant financial support, but also by pairing them with a mentor from their desired career field,” Hugh Maynard, 4-H Canada interim CEO, said in a news release. “This year’s recipients have shown tremendous leadership skills and have worked incredibly hard to positively impact their 4-H clubs, their communities, and the world. We are proud to support the next step in their exciting educational journeys, and look forward to seeing what the future holds for these bright young leaders.”
