Public Health Ontario is reporting 81 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours. That's a marked decline from yesterday, when the provincial authority reported 106 cases.
There were no new deaths reported today. Since the pandemic began, 2,789 people have died - including 1,800 people living in Ontario's long-term care homes. Eight employees of long-term care homes have also died.
Of the province's 34 public health units, 17 - or half - reported no new cases today.
There are a still few hot spots. According to the statistics released today, Peel Region reported 27 new cases and Toronto Public Health reported 10 new cases; they were the only two health units to report double-digit cases today.
Of today's 81 new cases, 37 are individuals between the ages of 20 and 39, 15 are between 40 and 59, 12 are 19 and under, 14 are between 60 and 79, while three of the newly-confirmed COVID-positive patients are over the age of 80.
There have been a total of 40,646 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario reported to date. Of those, 36,953 have been resolved - included 80 over the past 24 hours.
Across Ontario, 23,813 people were tested for COVID-19 yesterday. That brings the total number of tests conducted in the province to 2,582,652. The provincial agency notes 25,847 cases remain under investigation.
As of today, there are just 37 patients in Ontario who are hospitalized as a result of COVID-19. Among them, 18 are in intensive care units, while 9 are currently needing a ventilator to breathe. However, those numbers may not be accurate.
"As we often observe on weekends, a number of hospitals (approximately 40) did not submit data to the Daily Bed Census for Aug. 14," says Public Health Ontario. "We anticipate that the number of hospitalized patients may increase when reporting compliance increases."
As of Friday, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 670 cases of COVID-19 to date, with 638 of those cases located in Simcoe County.
There are 622 cases now recovered and 37 people have died in the region.
There are still 11 active cases in the county including residents from Barrie (4), Orillia (1), New Tecumseth (2), Innisfil (2), Essa (1), and Ramara (1). There is one active case in Muskoka. One person from New Tecumseth is hospitalized with COVID-19.
In Simcoe-Muskoka, the incidence rate for the coronavirus is 112.7 cases per 100,000 people in the population.
