Public Health Ontario has reported 1,890 new cases of COVID-19 today.
The province's public health agency also confirmed 28 deaths, which include one person between the ages of 40 and 59 years old, seven people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and 20 people over the age of 80. Eleven of the people whose deaths were reported today were long-term care residents.
According to the province's report posted today, 74 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since yesterday, and 16 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.
The province reported 1,924 new recoveries today, bringing the total number of active cases down from yesterday.
Of the 1,890 new cases reported today, 517 are from Toronto, 471 are from Peel, and 187 are from York Region.
The province confirmed 207 new school-related COVID cases today, including 174 students and 33 staff cases. In the last 14 days, the province has reported 1,616 school-related cases. There are 866 schools in Ontario with one or more confirmed cases of COVID-19, which is nearly 18 per cent of all the schools in the province. Eleven schools are currently closed because of COVID-19 cases.
There are currently 16,089 active, lab-confirmed cases, which is down from 16,151 reported yesterday. Of those, 811 people are hospitalized (up from 794 yesterday), and 221 COVID patients are in intensive care units (up from 219 yesterday), with 129 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 132 yesterday).
Since yesterday's report, provincial public health labs have processed 48,546 COVID tests, which produced a 4.4 per cent positivity rate.
To date, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 132,800 cases of COVID-19 and reported 112,875 recoveries and 3,836 deaths.
The cumulative average incidence rate in Ontario is 893.4 cases per 100,000 people. The seven-day average rate is 84.2 cases per 100,000 people from Nov. 29 to Dec. 5.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has now confirmed 2,462 cases of COVID-19 in the region with 2,047 of those cases recovered and 53 cases ending in death. There are 349 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Simcoe-Muskoka Region.
There are at least 16 people from Simcoe County hospitalized, but the health unit has not yet indicated where each of the hospitalized cases are from.
There have been 2,355 cases confirmed in just Simcoe County, with 1,952 of those now recovered and 52 ending in death.
The seven-day average incidence rate for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 45 cases per 100,000 people.
