Major equipment damage has caused a widespread power outage in the Port McNicoll area.

More than 1,800 homes and businesses are affected, according to NT Power. Crews initially responded to the outage at about 2 a.m. Thursday.

An hour later, they pegged the outage to last 12 to 14 hours to restore, their latest update puts the actual restoration as lasting well into Thursday night and possibly Friday morning to get everything up and running.

NT Power says the unexpected outage was caused by “major equipment damage due to a fire at its TayTownship station, which is affecting 1802 customers in the Port McNicoll area.”

The power utility said its working with Tay Township to establish a warming centre for those affected by the current outage.
