Penetanguishene will be hosting ceremonies for Remembrance Day, starting at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 11.
A Remembrance Day parade will travel north to the Penetanguishene cenotaph at Memorial Park, 121 Main St., beginning with a march of bagpipes and service members including those from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 68.
“Remembrance Day is an important time for our community to come together, to honour the brave individuals who have served our country as well as those who are currently serving,” said CAO Jeff Lees.
“This is a time to remember, reflect, show gratitude and pay tribute. The Town of Penetanguishene is proud to support our local Legion and have the opportunity to gather with our Legion and community members on Remembrance Day.”
Community members are encouraged to show support and recognition by wearing the Poppy.
“Poppies are available to purchase at the townhall until Remembrance Day,” Lees added. “Residents are also encouraged to take a moment on November 11th to observe a two-minute silence at 11:00 a.m.”
Town facilities will be closed for November 11.
In Midland, meanwhile, the parade will start at 10:50 a.m. from the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre to the nearby Cenotaph with the ceremony beginning at 11 a.m.
After the ceremony, the parade will march down King St. and head to the Midland Legion where community members can gather after the service.
“Midland participates in acts of remembrance throughout the year,” said Mayor Bill Gordon, “and remains in debt to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we all continue to enjoy, long after the guns on distant battlefields fell silent.”
“Midland residents are encouraged to purchase and wear a poppy from now until November 11th and attend the ceremony at the Midland Cenotaph with their children and grandchildren,” said Gordon. “Dress for the weather, bring lawn chairs, blankets, and most of all, be present.”
