In December, Hospice Huronia marked International Volunteer Day with a heartfelt tribute to the dedicated individuals who make the organization’s mission possible.

Volunteers are the heart of Hospice Huronia, and the organization is now looking for more volunteers to join the team — particularly for roles in the family kitchen during evenings and weekends.

As the demand for compassionate care continues to grow, Hospice Huronia is seeking volunteers who can lend a hand during these times, when the need for support is greatest.

Just a few hours a month can make a significant difference in the lives of families going through some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

“Volunteers play such a vital role in what we do,” says Kelly Asselin, volunteer lead at Hospice Huronia. “We are currently looking for volunteers who can assist in the family kitchen during evenings and weekends. It’s a simple but impactful way to give back to your community, and we’d love to inspire a new generation of volunteers to step up and make a difference.”

One volunteer, who exemplifies the impact that even a few hours can have, is Lois Andrews. Lois has been a devoted volunteer at Hospice Huronia for over two years, starting in the family kitchen, where she uses her love of cooking to help create nourishing meals for residents and their families.

“I love seeing the smiles on their faces when they sit down to a home-cooked meal,” Lois shares. “Sometimes, a cup of tea and a friendly ear can be just as comforting as a meal. That’s what we offer — more than just food, but a sense of peace and care during a challenging time.”

In addition to her work in the kitchen, Lois has recently joined the quality of care committee, furthering her impact within the organization.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my efforts help shape the care we provide here,” she adds. “Even a small contribution, like a few hours in the kitchen, can make a huge difference — for the families we serve and for the volunteers themselves.”

The family kitchen is a key part of Hospice Huronia, offering families a warm and inviting space to gather, share a meal, and find comfort. Volunteers help prepare meals, keep the kitchen space welcoming, and provide a compassionate presence to families in need.

Hospice Huronia is committed to offering flexible volunteer opportunities that can fit into anyone’s schedule. For those looking to volunteer during evenings or weekends, the family kitchen is in need of additional support. Whether you have just a few hours to spare each month or more time to give, every effort is appreciated.

Marie, another dedicated volunteer at Hospice Huronia, is an example of the kind of compassionate, community-minded individuals the organization hopes to inspire.

“Marie embodies the spirit of what we look for in volunteers — she is engaged, kind hearted, and genuinely dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others,” says Kelly Asselin. “Her involvement here is a wonderful reminder of how much impact one person can have.”

Volunteering at Hospice Huronia offers many rewards: the chance to make new connections, learn new skills, and experience the joy and fulfilment that comes from helping others. Lois encourages anyone with a little time to spare to get involved.

“It’s so fulfilling to be part of something bigger than yourself,” she says. “Even a few hours a month can create lasting change — for the people you’re helping and for yourself.”
