Two extra roads will get some better repairs this summer in Tiny Township as a result of a large under-budget tender.
At the recent committee of the whole meeting, the 2025 microsurfacing program was discussed regarding roughly 8.6 kilometres of the township’s roads.
A tender was awarded to Barrie-based Duncor Enterprises Inc for just under $278,500 plus HST, with the majority of the project to be located in the Georgian Sands Beach area subdivisions west of Lafontaine.
Roads scheduled for microsurfacing in the 2025 project included:
* Desroches Trail (approx. 1.65 km)
* Macedonia Court (approx. 850 m)
* Concession 15W between Wolfe Trail and 656 Concession 15W (approx. 500 m)
* Plan 1526 and 1537 Roads (Rue de Lac, Delbrooke Court, Cranbrooke Court, Huronia Court, Nottawasaga Court, Cape Cod Court, Rue de Parc, Nassau Court) (approx. 1.65 km)
* Robb's Road (approx. 400 m)
Public works director Tim Leitch explained that due to the under-budget tender, which came in for the proposed microsurfacing roads at nearly $200,000 lower than the next highest bid, two additional roads were included in the report as upgrades from the lesser single-surface treatments:
* Skylark Road from Hall Road to Tiny Beaches Road South (approx. 1.5 km)
* Concession 17 West from Potato Court to Cedar Point Road (approx 2 km)
The classification of the municipality’s 470 kilometres of roads, as per provincial minimum maintenance standards, range between Class 3 through Class 6 which dictate the level of lifecycle management they receive. A 2024 asset management plan provided which roads within the municipality ranged from very good to very poor condition.
Prior to complete road reconstruction, a municipality will extend the life of a current road through surface treatment options triggered by a pavement condition index. Single-surface treatment applications can extend road lifecycles by two years and raise conditions, but microsurfacing can extend the lifecycle by three years and raise conditions even higher.
When asked if the under-budget tender would allow future roadwork to be included in road management for this year, Leitch stated that it was an option explored by his department.
“What we want to do is make sure that prior to going in,” said Leitch, “that, in the budget we do have some patching that has to be done on the roads. We don’t use our regular patching budget for that; (we want to) use this capital budget for the road prep.
“If there are any savings of any significance, then we’ll definitely look at where we can extend within the existing area; go a little bit further, or other opportunities once we determine how much patching is required and prep work to the road,” Leitch added.
