Tay Township volunteer firefighter Barret Smith was left fighting for his life after a debilitating stroke in the summer of June.

The flags at the Tay Township's municipal office and fire halls have been lowered to honour the life and service of Barret Smith, a dedicated volunteer firefighter.

Smith had been a volunteer firefighter with Tay Fire and Emergency Services since November 16, 1999. He was a First Class firefighter at Station 4 Port McNicoll. At the 2019 Tay Christmas party, he received his 20-year service award.

At 48 years old, Smith suffered a debilitating stroke in the summer of 2023.

"Barret's selflessness and dedication to the safety of our community will never be forgotten," the township noted in a release.

"On behalf of Mayor Walker, council, staff and all residents of Tay Township, we extend our deepest condolences to the Smith family during this difficult time."
