Although Remembrance Day is still 10 days away, events in Tay Township are taking place starting this weekend for the annual commemoration of those who gave their lives for our country.

“Tay Township is honoured to support our local Legions and commemorate our veterans, leading up to November 11,” wrote Mayor Ted Walker via email. “We are focused on supporting our local Legions’ commemorative events and ensuring that the community is aware of opportunities to honour veterans.”

On Sunday, November 3 at 2 p.m., a Remembrance Day parade will take place in Waubaushene for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 316 Beaverbrook, located at 26 Willow Street.

A municipal flag-raising will be held at the Tay Township municipal office at 450 Park Street in Victoria Harbour the following day at 10 a.m. The event, open to all residents, will include raising the Poppy Flag as well as a proclamation that November 5 through 11 be named Veteran’s Week within Tay Township.

“Honouring our veterans is deeply meaningful for Tay Township. It’s a way for our community to stay connected to our roots, show appreciation for those who defended our freedoms, and ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten,” said Walker.

“It’s also an opportunity to bring residents together and reflect on the values of service, gratitude and community that shape who we are as a Township.”

Victoria Harbour Royal Canadian Legion Branch 523 Sunset Post, at 134 William Street, will host a Remembrance Day parade on Saturday, November 9 at 2 p.m.

On Sunday, November 10, a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. will be held by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 545 Bayport at 369 Armstrong Street in Port McNicoll.

“(Tay residents) can attend the events listed above,” said Walker. “They can also show their support by wearing a Poppy. Tay Township will once again have a poppy box at our Municipal Office for those looking to purchase a poppy and support our Legions; it will be available in the municipal office starting the last week of October.”
