Think you're jacked?
Well, an event happening Saturday evening in Victoria Harbour might be the answer to display those feats of strength.
Teams are now being accepted to raise money and have some fun in this year’s Tay fire truck pull with proceeds going towards efforts to buy an airboat for southern Georgian Bay.
Teams of 10 “pullers along with their personal team of cheerleaders (family and friends) will gather in the St. Antoine Daniel Catholic School parking lot to try to pull a fire truck 100 feet in the fastest time.
While all fitness levels are welcome, participants must be at least 15 years of age.
There are three team categories for entrants to choose from. Starting with amateur where participants "have the heart full of team spirit" to "built for this" with teams having "the heart of a competitor with horsepower." Youth teams are also welcome for young people aged 15 (or turning 15 in 2024) to 18 years old.
There will also be a barbecue and disc jockey on hand to provide some musical motivation for the competitors along with a 50/50 draw and chance to win tickets to see Neil Young and Crazy Horse in Toronto July 8.
As for the Southern Georgian Bay Airboat Rescue initiative, it all began on a single winter's day in 2021 when three snowmobilers died in the waters around Midland.
And with two of those sledders, a father and son, dying near her home in Victoria Harbour, Christina Wood knew she had to do something.
“Imagine a life hanging in the balance,” Wood told MidlandToday last year ahead of an inaugural fire truck pull in Midland.
“You hear ‘someone please help, call 911’. Chilling sounds of a voice calling for help in their final moments."
So far, the fundraising efforts have raised more than $300,000 towards the airboat with $47,000 left to go.
Registration for Saturday's event begins at 7 p.m. with the pull starting an hour later.
