Jivin' Johnny has left the building.

John Richardson Philips passed away on February 19 at Georgian Bay General Hospital.

John, who was born on October 31, 1943 in Brockville to Rich and Dorothy Philips, had been ill since the fall, but never let his frailties affect his good nature and zest for life.

Beloved husband of Carol (née Dowell) for 60 years and wonderful Dad to Andrew (Lise Turcotte), Laurie and Christian, who both predeceased him.

He was a fun and devoted Grandpapa to Josée, Carmelle and Mathilde, who all enjoyed his many amusing stories and anecdotes. He also adored his and Carol's dog Tilly and cat Downie.

He also leaves behind his loving sister Wendy Trutnau, brother-in-law John Dowell (Heather) and several nephews.

John enjoyed growing up along the banks of the St. Lawrence River and had many fun adventures with his close group of friends, who he remained in contact with throughout his life.

He would go on to serve a stint in the navy, work as a daily newspaper reporter and then in marketing for Reader’s Digest in Montréal while taking university courses at Sir George Williams (now Concordia).

John would soon find his dream job when he accepted a teaching position in Sioux Lookout.

After living in Montréal, Sioux Lookout and Bracebridge, John and Carol moved with their young family to Midland in 1975.

John taught English for many years at Midland Secondary School, regularly introducing film and music to explore lyrics, themes and ideas. A larger-than-life figure, he was a favourite of many students.

In his free time, he loved being with family, writing (he produced many works of fiction along with teaching resource books) and collecting records. Music was one of his passions and he attended many concerts over the years from King Crimson and the Who to Teenage Head and B.B. King.

Upon retirement, John volunteered at Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care with both inpatients and those living in the community. He would use music as a way to help people open up and explore their feelings.

He also started the Let’s Talk group at the Askennonia Seniors Centre that eventually transitioned into the Let’s Write group, which he led for many years. He enjoyed sharing his passion for writing with others and loved hearing what others had to say or write.

He lived his life every single day as a kind, generous and gentle man. He treated every person he met with respect and dignity and leaves behind many long-time friends.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

If desired, donations in John's memory can be made to Ralphy's Retreat Animal Sanctuary, Waypoint Volunteer Association for musical related activities or purchases to benefit patient programming or the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
