It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that the family of Barret Smith announce his sudden passing on Monday February 24, 2025, at the age of 50.

Barret will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by his parents Dan and Sandra Smith; his beloved spouse Sheri Robinson of 12 years; his cherished children Makenna and Levi; stepchildren Charlie and Sam; sisters Heather (Frank) and Leslie, brother Alex (Kristy); as well as his nieces Sadie, Danica, Maila, Megan and nephews Riley, Liam. He will be fondly remembered and missed by numerous relatives, and friends.

Barret had an adventurous and fun-filled childhood at “the farm” on Triple Bay Road with many friends that always remained an important part of his life, being there to the very end. If one can count wealth by the number of friends one has, Barret was a very wealthy man by this metric and we’re all the richer for having known him.

He went on to study Mechanical Engineering at Sir Sanford College in Peterborough, lived and worked for a stint in Toronto, then decided to settle back in his hometown where he landed a job at Elcan and developed friendships with many of his colleagues.

Generous and courageous, Barret always wanted to give back to his community and did so by serving as a volunteer firefighter. He was a First Class firefighter at Station 4 Port McNicoll with over 23 years of service. He helped and touched the lives of many in the community in a positive, respectful and compassionate manner and many consider him a hero.

He had various interests and his talent to restore and repair all manner of things from cars to guitars kept him busy. He always saw the potential in his projects and restored old Volvos (his favourites), Volkswagens and many an old beater to drive into the ground again. Those close to him know the amazing collections of Lego, Star Wars memorabilia, guitars and cool t-shirts that he always enjoyed.

His love of music was obvious to anyone who hung around him with tunes playing in the background wherever he was. Driven by this passion he taught himself, as an adult, to play guitar and then become a founding member of a local band called “The Wrongs”. He would play the guitar and sing his heart out, putting a smile on the faces of those that would come out to the gigs.

The love the members of his band had for him was evident when they played a fundraiser after his initial stroke for which his spouse and family will be forever grateful for, along with the generous donations from those in the community that knew and loved him. The family would like to express their gratitude for all the support, love, and devotion given to Barret throughout his life and during his difficult last months.

A celebration of life drop-in will be held Sunday March 9th from 12-3pm at Carson Funeral Home at 290 First Street, Midland – 705-526-6551. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place.

If desired, donations in Barret’s memory can be made to The Salvation Army and The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Stay tuned for another celebration of life for Barret sometime this summer. “The dude abides”
