The man accused of starting a fire that destroyed a downtown Orillia building this month has been arrested for allegedly failing to comply with a release order.

On Jan. 22, a day after fire tore through a building at the corner of Peter and Mississaga streets, police arrested Brandon Costa, 35, of Brampton, and charged him with arson. He was released from custody with conditions.

On Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m., police were called to a report of an unwanted person at an address on Queen Street East in Orillia. When officers arrived, the man was no longer at the location.

Shortly after, he was located and was found to have a lighter in his possession, Orillia OPP said in a news release, noting his conditions included that he not be in possession of any accelerant to start a fire.

Costa has been charged with two counts of failure to comply with a release order other than to attend court. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
