Barrie police responded to an afternoon break-in call Sunday and found four suspects at the scene in a west-end apartment complex.
On March 9 at 4:17 p.m., police say officers responded to a report of a break-and-enter in progress at an apartment complex located on Edgehill Drive.
Upon arrival at the complex, police say four people were located by officers in the lobby area and it was “very quickly” determined that the people, who were trying to leave, were allegedly responsible for the reported break-in.
Police said two men and two women were immediately taken into custody and transported to police headquarters on Fairview Road where detectives continued the investigation.
As a result of the investigation that followed, it was determined that a break-and-enter did not take place, but items from the involved apartment had been stolen by the four people who were in custody.
All four suspects have all been jointly charged with theft under $5,000.
Three of them — a 43-year-old Barrie man, a 33-year-old Tiny Township woman and a 33-year-old Barrie woman — were released on an undertaking that requires them to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on April 9.
The fourth suspect, a 35-year-old Barrie man, was also charged with obstructing a peace officer and failing to comply with a release order. He has been held in custody for a bail hearing, which is scheduled to take place later today.
“Although this incident was isolated to the address in which police responded, given the size of the complex, a significant but appropriately measured police response resulted in this matter being resolved within mere minutes of the call being received, and at no time was the safety of this residential community compromised,” police stated in a news release.
