Barrie police have charged a 45-year-old man with impaired driving after a citizen reported a vehicle being “oddly operated” last night in a south-end neighbourhood.

Shortly after 10 p.m. on Dec. 5, responding officers, who were provided very detailed and accurate information, located the suspect vehicle as it entered a driveway south of Little Avenue, where it was parked by the driver, according to police.

Police said the driver exhibited “obvious” signs of impairment and was placed under arrest for impaired driving.

“Due to the snowfall that was happening last night, the outcome of what was a poor decision to try out some new snow tires in an aggressive manner could have ended in a tragic outcome,” police said.

The man was transported to police headquarters on Fairview Road where a breathalyzer operator continued the investigation and was able to confirm the man was well over twice the legal limit, police say.

The driver was charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired (alcohol and drugs) and operation while impaired (blood-alcohol concentration over .80 milligrams). He is scheduled to appear in Barrie court later this month.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.

Police said the vehicle he was operating has been impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days in accordance with the Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) program.

“This incident is an excellent example of the positive results that can occur when the community and police work together, and police credit this community-minded citizen with making the right call,” police said.
