The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called after a suspect was “seriously” injured during a police raid in Barrie on the weekend.
City police responded to a call on Sunday about a man with a gun.
Police went to a residence on Tunbridge Road in the city’s north end shortly before 7 a.m on March 23.
Police said they arrested a 27-year-old Barrie man, who is now facing numerous firearm and drug-related charges.
“As a result of an interaction between the male and police, the SIU has invoked their mandate,” police communications co-ordinator Jennett Mays said Tuesday.
According to the SIU, a woman called police in relation to a domestic disturbance involving the male at a Barrie residence in the area of Georgian Drive and Penetanguishene Road.
"Tactical support unit officers were dispatched and eventually entered the home, where there was an interaction with officers in the course of the man's arrest," SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette confirmed.
She said the man was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a "serious" injury, although no other details were released.
He was treated and released back into police custody.
A nearby resident described what they saw to Village Media shortly after the incident.
“They smashed the front door down and the garage door, (and) threw a flash-bang in. Then all these other police came across our front doors with dogs and guns and telling us to get inside,” said Adam Robertson.
Police said they cleared the scene at approximately 1 p.m.
