Suspected fentanyl seized during impaired driving investigation

Two people are facing charges after what was believed to be fentanyl was seized during an impaired driving investigation.

Ontario Provincial Police were called to the Mountainview Mall area at around 2:30 p.m. Friday after someone reported two people who appeared to be unconscious in a vehicle.

Arriving officers say they woke the pair up and suspected the driver could be impaired.

Russell Hamley, 66, of Penetanguishene has been charged with

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Have care or control of vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Opioid (other than heroin) contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act

The passenger, 31-year-old Alexandra Assance of Christian Island has been charged with:

  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Opioid (other than heroin) contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
