After 50 years as a volunteer instructor, we deliver a well-deserved Random Act of Kindness to this first-aider

Our Random Act of Kindness recipient is Bev Steele, a local sharing her knowledge in Midland, Penetang and beyond

Bev Steele, left, was surprised with a Random Act of Kindness from MidlandToday

Bev Steele has continually given back to her community for generations by providing first aid instruction.

For years, first with St. John Ambulance and now with the Community Emergency Response team, Bev has volunteered to teach first aid.

Inspired by Bev, her friend nominated her for a MidlandToday Random Act of Kindness.

“Bev is always fundraising and supporting others,” said her nominator, Verna Porter. “She goes above and beyond to assist friends dealing with health problems and family issues, ensuring they have the support they need during tough times.”

We decided to repay Bev’s kindness and surprise her with a Random Act of Kindness, arriving at the Penetang Village Square Mall with gifts from our generous community partners.

This included a gift certificate to her favourite restaurant and a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers.

Bev was touched yet playfully surprised to receive the Random Act of Kindness.

“It was quite the surprise!” Bev said. “I told them all off because they admitted they knew about it. I gave a couple of friendly taps on the shoulder. I couldn’t figure it out at first. Even when I saw the flowers, it still didn’t register.”

Bev had a lot to say about the importance of volunteerism when reflecting on this acknowledgement of her incredible work with the community over the years.

"I intend to keep doing it more because our communities are our number one priority—always have been, always will be. Our team may be small, but they’re mighty,” shared Bev.

“People don’t understand the importance of volunteering to the community," she added. “I was raised to help the community, to help people and I raised my children with the same attitude. One of my children is a medic and the other an RCMP.”

“Parents are responsible to show their youth why there are volunteers and what they can learn by being a volunteer so we can pass that on to the future generations. It doesn’t stop with me,” she advocated.

Thank you to our co-sponsors Boston Pizza and Fresh by Leanne Flowers for making this Random Act of Kindness possible.
