As September 30th approaches, Canada will observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to honouring the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities. This day also coincides with Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led initiative aimed at raising awareness of the intergenerational impacts of residential schools and promoting the message that “Every Child Matters.” The orange shirt serves as a symbol to honour the children who survived residential schools and remember those who did not. It also reflects the deep loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children across generations.

Event Details:
Date: Friday, September 27, 2024
Time: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Location: Midland Community Health Hub, 287 Bayshore Drive, Midland, ON

The partners at the Midland Community Health Hub, including CHIGAMIK Community Health Centre, the Hero Centre, North Simcoe Youth Wellness Hub, Patient/Client and Family Council and Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, invite you to join us in commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This event will include:

  • 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Welcome and Ceremony (Smudge, Sacred Fire, Prayer)
  • 11:00 AM - 11:45 AM: Storytelling
  • 11:45 AM - 12:00 PM: Drumming and Singing
  • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM: Catered Lunch for the Community

“This event is a vital opportunity for our community to come together in reflection and solidarity. By honouring the experiences of Survivors and recognizing the enduring impact of residential schools, we move closer to reconciliation and healing. We encourage everyone to join us in wearing orange and participating in this meaningful day,” said Suzanne Marchand, Executive Director, CHIGAMIK Community Health Centre.

Local community organizations will also be setting up informational booths to provide additional resources and support. Attendees are encouraged to wear orange. For more information, please visit www.chigamik.ca or contact Cassandra Forget at 705-527-4154 x7247.
