Nothing to be wily about, just stay safe.
During a recent regular meeting of Midland council, Coun. Jim Downer reflected some local observations of wildlife.
“I live at the corner of Fourth and Bay streets and there’s been coyote sightings here,” said Downer. “So be careful with your pets; your dogs and your cats. Two coyotes have been frequenting this area, about eleven o’clock at night.”
Coun. Jonathan Main pointed residents to the Town of Midland website, which contains information on a page titled Coyotes In A Small Town.
“Most of the times,” advised Main on countermeasures, “it’s noises, it’s fencing to prevent them coming on your property, and just trying to scare them away. To scoot them away with noises, pots and pans, that kind of thing.”
Downer jokingly asked if a firearm would do, which prompted laughter and several people saying no.
“Maybe an ACME rocket or something,” quipped Coun. Bill Gordon. “Always seemed to do in the coyote on TV.”
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry website contains additional information supporting landowners and municipalities dealing with problem coyotes.
If you see a coyote in your neighbourhood, call Huronia Animal Control at (705) 549-2289 or OPP at OPP at (888) 310-1122.
