This week's white powder is like gold for area skiers.

Horseshoe Valley Resort in Oro-Medonte says "it's time to kick off an incredible winter season," with the slopes opening Friday and continuing over the weekend for skiing and snowboarding. Horseshoe will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. over the three days.

Horseshoe didn't indicate how many of its 29 runs will be open, but ski stations typically stagger the number of runs open as their groomers work their magic.

Mount St. Louis Moonstone, also located in Oro-Medonte, is celebrating its 60th season this year. It will also be open Friday with 10 and of its 36 slopes open and liftees manning four chairs throughout the day. The ski station reports that it currently has a base depth of 20 to 50 centimetres.

Blue Mountain Resort in the Collingwood area is officially kicking off its season Saturday with runs open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather and conditions permitting. The resort didn't indicate how many runs will be open.

Snow Valley, located just north of Barrie in the Midhurst area, is scheduled to open on Dec. 14.
