NEWS RELEASE
ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION

On Saturday, before Remembrance Day services began, MPP Jill Dunlop had the opportunity to hear from members of the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Sunset Post Branch 523 about the impact of the branch’s $95,000 capital grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).
Funds from the grant, awarded in the fall of 2023, were used to pave the branch’s parking lot and it’s also helping the Legion make other accessibility upgrades to its building. The new parking lot will provide a safer, more accessible access to the facility for years to come.
“Congratulations to the RCL Branch 523 on their successful OTF grant. This funding has allowed the branch to pave their parking lot, significantly enhancing safety and accessibility for all members and visitors,” said Jill Dunlop, MPP for Simcoe North. “This project not only ensures a safer environment but also demonstrates the Legion’s ongoing commitment to serving our community. I commend the hard work and dedication of RCL 523 in securing this vital support. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future for our veterans and their families.”
Some of the work involved with adding new accessible features like a ramp and entry area, as well as an accessible deck, are still happening, but the paving in the parking lot is completed. These upgrades will help support the Legion’s demographic of members and visitors. The Victoria Harbour Legion Sunset Post Branch 523 is an integral part of Victoria Harbour, and this will allow people of all abilities to attend a variety of community meetings, celebrations, and fundraisers.
“The impact of the branch has been amazing,” said Randy Hipson, first vice-president, Royal Canadian Legion Sunset Post Branch 523. “The grant through the OTF allowed us to do this project, which allows safe access to our building for many years to come.”
The Royal Canadian Legion Sunset Post Branch 523 is a cornerstone in Victoria Harbour and surrounding community supporting our veterans and their families as well as the community at large.
“Whether it’s helping people learn new things, connect with their community, or simply have fun, organizations like the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 523 Sunset Post deliver experiences that make a difference,” said Stan Cho, minister of tourism, culture and gaming. “That’s why grant support through the Ontario Trillium Foundation is so important. This funding will help ensure that it remains at the heart of the community for decades to come.”
The OTF is an agency of the Ontario government with a mission to build healthy and vibrant communities across the province. Last year, OTF invested more than $110 million into 1,044 community projects and multi-sector partnerships. Projects aim to enhance economic well-being, foster more active lifestyles, support child and youth development, provide spaces for people to come together and connect, and create a more sustainable environment.
