Local cancer support centre celebrating $166K Trillium grants

Penetanguishene-based organization received OTF capital grant for $93,300 to better accessibility and OTF Resilient Communities Grant for $73,900 to enhance member experience and volunteer programs

The Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre (GBCSC) in Penetanguishene received two grants totalling $166,200 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) over recent months.

A special recognition event to celebrate this significant funding took place Friday with Simcoe North MPP Jill Dunlop and OTF volunteer Vanessa Quesnel  on hand along with GBCSC staff, volunteers and members.

“I was thrilled to hear of the support provided through OTF for the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre with these two grants,” Dunlop said. “The funding will benefit many families in our region who are facing the unknown that comes with a cancer diagnosis and who need support. It has enhanced the ability of GBCSC to continue to maintain vital support, education, and motivation for people living with cancer, their families, and caregivers.”

An OTF capital grant for $93,300 is being utilized to make improvements to the centre’s deck and program areas so they are more accessible and usable for the diverse population served by the GBCSC. The second grant awarded to the GBCSC was an OTF Resilient Communities Grant for close to $73,900 to help the centre enhance member experience and volunteer programs.

The special event Friday coincided with the GBCSC’s popular, biweekly Soup for the Soul program. It welcomes those who are fighting cancer, survivors, and caregivers to come for a warm bowl of soup, friendly conversation, and an opportunity to connect with others who are on a similar journey.
