The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind boaters that all non-essential travel is being discouraged by the Ontario Ministry of Health at this time, including travel by water.
Though the air temperature is rising, local waters are still icy cold. Survival time is greatly diminished for someone immersed in cold water, but if you must be on the water, here are a few tips for cold water safety:
- Always wear a life jacket as it will greatly improve your chances of surviving an unexpected immersion;
- Ensure that you have all of your required safely equipment for the classification of vessel you are operating and that you have checked to ensure it is in good working order;
- Check the local weather before heading out;
- Wear apparel that is appropriate for cold water emersion;
- Plan your trip and share your plan with someone you trust; and,
- Don't drink and/or use drugs and drive.
Please keep in mind that most marinas and public boat launches are currently closed which could hinder the response time of emergency services. We appreciate your efforts to ensure everyone's safety, including that of front line personnel.
