NEWS RELEASE
QUEST ART SCHOOL AND GALLERY
*************************
Quest Art School is pleased to announce another community-based project taking place on July 1.
Thirty-two years ago, Indigenous rights activist and leader George Erasmus made an impassioned presentation in the House of Commons in regards to preparations for the 125th anniversary of Confederation. He demanded to know “What Native peoples have to celebrate” citing poverty, unemployment, racism and dishonoured Treaties. Since then, even though we supposedly have entered into a time of Reconciliation, very little has changed. And with the recent discovery of almost 1,000 unmarked graves of children at the sites of former residential schools, Canada can no longer hide behind a façade and must come to terms with the genocidal history that it has tried to hide.
In Erasmus’s speech he repeats that things MUST change. And the time is now. Canada has much to atone for. We need to acknowledge this. And we must find a way to move forward to build a new future together, to bring about real reconciliation, and to decide what the future of this country should look like. Now is the time. We can’t wait another 30 years or even three years or three months to make change happen.
Because of this, on July 1, we are inviting members of our communities to meet us at Discovery Harbour and work together on a mural that reflects that commitment for bringing about change. For healing. For hope. For envisioning what we could be and how we can bring about a positive future for all of us who share our existence on Turtle Island.
