Editor's note: In this series, we ask local municipal politicians to address a number of questions pertaining to their role representing the community.

Today, we hear from Penetanguishene Deputy Mayor Dan La Rose.

What do you consider council's most important accomplishment this past year? Why? What has been the biggest challenge for you in your first year in office?

I think the most important accomplishment as well as the biggest challenge has been the collapsed building on Main Street. Partnering with the County to get the affected residents housed and working with all of the different agencies to get it cleaned up and reopened was a monumental task. I am so proud and appreciative of everyone’s efforts and teamwork on this matter.

Are you satisfied with work on the 2024 budget? Why or why not?

I am somewhat satisfied with the 2024 budget. The system we use allows us to stay on track with our operating costs while adding an appropriate level of funding for capital projects.

What has been the most surprising aspect of your term on council so far? What have you learned?

The most surprising aspect this term has been the defunding of the library by our municipal neighbour. The ramifications of their decision have caused a large disruption in our library services.

Can you speak to being a politician in today's climate? Does social media pose unique issues in your work? If so, how do you manage these issues?

I find that people are more aware and responsive to issues that happen throughout the town. I am not a frequent social media user; I still prefer speaking directly to our residents for their feedback or concerns.
