Jessica Laurin has been living every parent's worst nightmare these past few months,

Laurin's son Aven Akerman died following a single-vehicle accident that saw his car ended up in a ditch in the Town of Blue Mountains on April 26..

She tells MidlandToday, it's difficult to put into words what the last couple of months have been like as the family, which also includes Aven's sister Ella and father Chris Akerman, struggles to face their tragic new reality.

Known for his vibrant spirit, infectious laugh and compassionate soul, the 20-year-old Penetanguishene man was well loved by many.

"The family and friends are struggling daily with the tragic loss of a young, caring, handsome, fun, lovable joker," Laurin says. "And we miss his contagious laugh and beautiful blue eyes and big smile."

Aven Akerman attended École secondaire Le Caron and according to his obituary, “his passion for life was evident in everything he pursued; including spending time with family and friends, whether it be snowmobiling, skiing, hockey, paintball, Xbox, and his new found love for fishing.

Laurin says they dearly wish their son was still with them since "he still had lots to learn and things to do."

She adds: "We can only keep his honour and memory alive by sharing his stories and our memories even thought we want him beside us. The family is still collecting donations through a fundraiser to help with some unexpected cost and the purchase of a memorial bench

A celebration of life will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at the Akerman family home.
