It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Irene Robertson-Smith of Penetanguishene on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the age of 78 years.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Elizabeth (Betty) Spielmaker; her brother William (Bill) Robertson, her niece Allison, nephew Craig and great-niece Emma; her sister Catherine (Rena) (John) Benn, her niece Karen (Paul) Kahkonen and children Cole, Katie and Megan, and her niece Heather (Andy) Hayes and children Hannah, Grace, Hope and Benn; her nephew Andrew (Drew) Robertson and niece Jeanette (Jan) Gillmer. Irene will be dearly missed as stepmother to Laurel Whitham (Dan) and Suzanne Nevins (Tim); loving step grandmother to Ryan (Piper), Kyle (Emily) and Tyler (Emma) Whitham; Matthew (Kathy) and Adam (Jennifer) English and nine step great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her many friends at First Presbyterian Church in Penetanguishene as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her loving husband William (Bill) Smith; her brothers, Andrew, Robert, Joseph, and John; her brother-in-law Karl Spielmaker; sister-in-law Margaret Robertson; her parents Catherine (nee Alexander) and Andrew Robertson.

Irene was fiercely proud of her Scottish roots and delighted in becoming a Canadian citizen. Irene’s strong work ethic allowed her to succeed wherever she was. After retiring from CDI in Markham, Ontario, Irene moved up to the Midland Penetanguishene area. She was active in her community, including volunteering at Georgian Bay General Hospital, knitting and baking for her church, and gardening at her retirement residence.

A service for Irene will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 11am at First Presbyterian Church. located at 20 Robert St East in Penetangiushene.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Gannon as well as the staff at Hospice Huronia Tompkins House for their amazing care and compassion during Irene’s stay. A very special thanks also goes to her loyal friend of eight years, Brenda Duquette, for her tireless support and companionship during Irene’s final weeks and days.
