Police used a tire-deflation device to stop an alleged impaired driver Tuesday in Innisfil.

At about 3:30 p.m., South Simcoe police responded to a report of a possible impaired driver in the area of Innisfil Beach Road and 20th Sideroad. He was first seen holding an open can of alcohol out of his window and was attempting to “cheers” vehicles being driven near him, according to a news release.

Police learned the man had been swerving into other lanes, almost hit a flagman in a construction zone, and almost hit a pedestrian crossing the street.

Police located the vehicle nearby, but despite telling the driver numerous times he was under arrest and to get out of his vehicle, the accused kept trying to flee. Eventually, a tire-deflation device was used.

A 32-year-old Innisfil man has been charged with operation while impaired, operation while prohibited by order, dangerous operation, entering land on which a line work is situated, obstructing police, driving while under suspension (two counts), and driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor. He was held for a bail hearing.
