Early morning traffic stop near Wyevale leads to cocaine seizure

Driver faces slew of charges after vehicle pulled over by OPP and then impounded

An early morning vehicle stop by a member of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police has resulted in a drug seizure and vehicle impound plus charges for a Tiny Township resident.

At 2:38 a.m. on March 17, on Simcoe County Road 6 outside of Wyevale, the officer pulled over a white Jeep for a traffic violation.

Police say that after speaking with the driver an identity investigation was conducted. Further investigation resulted in the seizure of open liquor and a quantity of suspected cocaine and drug paraphernalia, police said in a news release.

Nelson Robert Laramey, 42, was charged with obstructing a peace officer and operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code.

He was also charged with possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine) under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.

The OPP said the accused is also charged with the following provincial offences:

  • Drive motor vehicle while suspended (two counts)
  • Drive motor vehicle - no licence
  • Fail to provide permit - motor vehicle
  • Fail to provide insurance card
  • Improper mud guards
  • Operate motor vehicle with open liquor readily available to driver

Laramey was served a notice to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on May 1.

Police said the Jeep was towed and impounded for 45 days in accordance with Ministry of Transportation guidelines.

The accused was then turned over to OPP officers at another detachment who had a number of warrants for his arrest.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Laramey is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
