Police seized what they are calling a “historical wartime grenade” following an incident Wednesday in Bobcaygeon.

At about 1 p.m., police received a call regarding an elderly man. The complainant stepped away from the man and told him police would be contacted, City of Kawartha Lakes OPP said in a news release. The man was taken into custody and taken to hospital without incident.

Police found the grenade and other weaponry. Members of the OPP’s explosive disposal team were contacted, and they then consulted with the Department of National Defence.

Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution, and an elementary school in the area was placed in hold-and-secure mode. The hold and secure was soon lifted as the incident was isolated to the one residence.

A bomb technician from Canadian Forces Base Trenton attended the scene, removed the grenade and took it for disposal, while the other weaponry was seized by OPP officers.

“The City of Kawartha Lakes OPP want to remind community members that if ever in a similar situation where weapons or explosives are located, do not attempt to dispose of them yourself. Contact the OPP immediately, move to a safe location and ensure that no one else gets close,” police said.
