A Christian Island man was arrested twice within about a three-hour time frame in Midland.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday, a caller reported the theft of a black Ford Fusion from a parking lot at a Midland restaurant. Police located the vehicle parked on the road in front of an Ottawa Street residence.

Video surveillance helped officers identify the suspect, who is known to police. He was located a short time later at a Seventh Street address and was arrested. Police recovered items stolen from the vehicle, including the owner’s identification and credit cards, Southern Georgian Bay OPP said in a news release.

The accused was later released from custody with a future court date.

Shortly after 12 a.m. Saturday, police were called to an area of Seventh Street for a report of a suspicious person entering and attempting to enter parked vehicles. The suspect — the same person arrested and released earlier — was arrested again.

Jonathan Sylvester, 36, has been charged with the following:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (three counts)
  • Failure to comply with a probation order (10 counts)
  • Trespassing at night
  • Break, enter a place with intent to commit an indictable offence
  • Failure to comply with an undertaking

The accused is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
