A Penetanguishene man is facing charges after an impaired operation investigation Wednesday led police to identify him as a suspect in a break-in that happened on the weekend.

Shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of a possible impaired driver behind the wheel of a Mini Cooper in the parking lot at Huronia Mall in Midland. An officer found the driver slumped over the steering wheel, Southern Georgian Bay OPP said in a news release. The officer woke up the driver, who then tried to flee on foot.

Police seized an edged weapon and what is believed to be fentanyl, as well as drug paraphernalia.

The investigation revealed the Mini Cooper had been reported stolen at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday from a Hugel Avenue residence in Midland.

Tyler Sylvester, 31, has been charged with the following:

  • Operation while impaired (alcohol and drugs)
  • Failure to comply with a probation order
  • Operation while impaired (blood-drug concentration)
  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance (other drugs)

Police later identified the accused as the outstanding second suspect in a break-in and theft that happened at a Midland restaurant on Sunday. Sylvester was further charged with break, enter a place (commit an indictable offence), theft under $5,000, and mischief (destroys or damages property).

He was held for a bail hearing that was scheduled for Wednesday.
