Visiting kayaker capsized vessel, credits life-jacket for saving him

Nine operators were charged by Southern Georgian Bay OPP with life-jacket offences between June 21 and 30

Police handed out charges to some and rewards to others while patrolling local waterways June 21 to 30.

Southern Georgian Bay OPP officers spent more than 87 hours patrolling during that time frame, checking 102 vessels. Fifty-two people were “educated” for minor violations of the Canada Shipping Act. Three others were charged under the act.

Nine operators were charged with life-jacket offences, while one was charged with a liquor-related offence.

A 27-year-old Calgary man was rescued June 27 after upsetting his kayak in metre-plus waves off Giant’s Tomb.

Young occupants of several vessels were rewarded for wearing their life-jackets, receiving ‘I Got Caught Wearing My Life-jacket’ T-shirts.

On June 24, the OPP Marine Unit, in partnership with Parks Canada officers from Georgian Bay Islands National Park, conducted search and rescue exercises in the area.
