‘Keeping things fresh’: Handcrafted ciders now on tap in Coldwater

‘You can enjoy the view, and we have a nice new outdoor tasting area with picnic tables,’ said co-owner of Woodfolk Cider, which recently opened to the public

After brewing up plans for more than three years, a new cidery in the rolling hills of Coldwater is officially open to the public.

Using apples grown on site and from neighbouring farms, Woodfolk Cider offers four different handcrafted ciders for the community to try.

Located at 1151 Warminster Sideroad, the cidery officially opened over the July long weekend, and this Saturday it’s collaborating with Eclectic Cafe to host food and cider pairings for the public.

The property boasts panoramic views of the surrounding farmland, with facilities constructed by owners Martha Lowry and Alastair Whitehead, who are both thrilled to see their plans finally coming to fruition.

“It's so nice to have people here and tasting cider and just enjoying the space,” Lowry said. “We started selling in December and working on this project for three years to build this building.”

Lowry said the plan is to host pop-up food vendors every couple of weeks, like this weekend’s Eclectic Cafe; she says the cidery will offer apples and fresh apple juice in the fall, as well.

As the summer rolls on, Whitehead said new varieties of cider will continue to be released.

“We have a few more ciders that are not released yet that are (going to) be coming out through the summer,” he said. “We’re gonna be keeping things fresh through the summer, so I'm excited.”

The cidery’s newly opened tasting bar features an outdoor seating area overlooking the surrounding landscape, offering flights of different ciders and bottles for customers to take home.

“One of the reasons that we bought (this farm) is there really is a very nice vista here,” Whitehead said. “You can enjoy the view, and we have a nice new outdoor tasting area with picnic tables, and some seating where you can sit and you can do tasting flights, enjoy a glass of cider, and take some cold bottles to go.”

Woodfolk Cider is open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays, and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, as well as by appointment.

Local customers can also order online for delivery, Lowry said.
