Concerned callers help OPP nab pair of impaired drivers

In one incident, off-duty officer noted vehicle stopped in a live lane; police found driver passed out at the wheel

OPP were able to remove two impaired drivers from the roads over the long weekend thanks to several calls from the public. 

At approximately 4:19 a.m. July 1, 2024 officers were dispatched to a report from an off-duty police officer with a white Nissan Versa vehicle that was stopped in a live lane at the intersection of Highway 93 and Vasey Road in the Township of Tay.

Upon arrival, police found the driver passed out at the wheel and after awakening and speaking with the driver, the officers entered into an impaired driving investigation resulting in an arrest and further investigation at detachment.

As a result, Tyler Kopka, 23, of Mississauga, has been charged criminally with operation while impaired — alcohol and drugs and further with operation while impaired — blood alcohol concentration (80 plus). 

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 18, 2024, was served a 90-day driver's licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.

Another call from the public at approximately 3:24 a.m. on June 29, 2024 of a black GMC vehicle being operated in an erratic fashion eastbound on Highway 12 near Park Street, Tay Township resulted in several officers patrolling the area with a similar vehicle being observed entering a business parking lot off Pine Street, Waubaushene.

Officers observed an occupant of the vehicle flee from the vehicle who was located by the officers nearby in an wooded area and became the subject of an impaired driving investigation.

As a result, Brenden Marchildon, 32, of Penetanguishene was charged criminally in this investigation with Operation while impaired — alcohol and drugs and further with Operation while impaired — blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The accused was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 11, 2024, was served a 90 day driver's licence suspension and the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days in accordance to the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) guidelines.
