A fun day on the lake turned into a tragedy this weekend north of Orillia.

Witnesses say a young man was "executing a manoeuvre" on a personal watercraft on Indian River just west of Mirror Lake in the Port Carling area Saturday, when he was thrown into the water and failed to resurface.

A search began immediately and the 23-year-old from Brampton was brought to shore.

"Unfortunately life-saving efforts were not successful," notes a media release from the Bracebridge OPP.

"If you are enjoying the lakes and rivers in Muskoka, any type of vessel, this summer, please remember that life-jackets must be worn in order to be effective," notes the OPP media release.

"Ensure that you have the necessary safety equipment on board and always share your plan with a person on land so that if you encounter trouble, that information will be available to emergency services."
