Since July 1, marine officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment responded to 15 calls for service while patrolling local waterways.

Calls varied from well being checks on several mariners, marine related verbal disputes in a swim zone, investigating an vessel aground incident and assisting mariners whose boats had either broken down or overturned.

Over the same time period, officers logged 59 hours of patrol time, checking 71 vessels for required equipment and signs of operator impairment.

This resulted in four people being charged for liquor related offences along with two alcohol screening tests conducted.

As well, 27 operators were educated in various marine related violations that were minor in nature. Four operators were ticketed for failing to have sufficient lifejackets and two operators were ticketed for violations under the Canada Shipping Act.

Officers also visited area marinas to connect with boat owners and share some valuable safety tips as boaters loaded up their crafts with supplies and fuel.
