16-Apr-1936 - 13-Nov-2024
Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at Hospice Huronia, Penetanguishene in her 89th year of life. Elizabeth of Midland, formerly of Wexford, Ireland, leaves behind much loved family members, friends and neighbours.
Elizabeth was a teacher for 40 years where she touched the lives of many people. Throughout her life she was a strong advocate for peace, social justice and civil liberties. After teaching, when Elizabeth lived full time in Midland, she worked with the Seniors Council and chaired it for 3 terms helping to inspire seniors and studying the gaps in services.
Elizabeth was a member of Peaceworks, from 2002 until her passing where she shone a light on diplomatic alternatives to war. Elizabeth was instrumental in creating two peace gardens; one in Penetang and the other in Midland. These two beautiful gardens are a tribute to her hard work.
Another of Elizabeth’s passions was literacy. She was part of Midland Reads in 2015 where she participated in debating the merits of a book that she had selected for the competition. Up until last year she also taught English as a Second Language to newcomers in the Midland area so they could get jobs and assimilate into the English-speaking community.
Elizabeth travelled extensively, and she also lived in several countries when she was in service to the church. She lived in Ireland , France, Switzerland, Nigeria, and Toronto, Canada before settling in Midland.
Elizabeth was an avid gardener, animal lover and a 22 year volunteer with the Library Garden Tour supporting acquisitions and programs for all. She will be missed by many.
Family and friends are invited to Nicholls Funeral Home, Midland, Ontario to celebrate the life of Elizabeth. A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024 from 12pm (noon). A Memorial Service will begin at 1pm in the funeral home Chapel followed by a reception also at the funeral home. If desired to place a donation under Elizabeth’s name in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice Huronia (Tomkins House) in her memory. Arrangements entrusted to Nicholls Funeral Home.
